River Jude Phoenix
23 August 1970 - 31 October 1993
When River Phoenix passed away at the age of 23 on 31 October 1993, he not only broke the hearts of his family and friends - but also those of his countless fans and admirers across the world. We were all left to wonder why, and reflect on what might have been.
River was a gentle, sensitive soul who loved everything and everybody. He had been a strict vegan since he was a young boy - and was often seen or heard campaigning for his favourite charity, PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He was also concerned about the state of the planet, as highlighted in this quote:
"I've just bought 800 acres of forest on the border of Panama and Costa Rica. I want to buy the last "first growth forest" and turn it into a national park. It's a human tragedy of immense proportions. Many native Indians in that region are losing their homes daily, and it's going to affect both you and me, because that's where most of the world's oxygen comes from. The Amazon rain forests are the world's lungs and without them we will not be able to breath. It's a very scary thought and it's not too far off."
He was also, of course, a highly talented and respected actor - his most memorable performance being that of Chris Chambers in 'Stand by Me.' Throughout his acting career, River made some lasting friendships - Sidney Poitier, Richard Harries, Harrison Ford and Dan Ackroyd - amongst others. Most of these friends were present at the memorial service held for River, in Los Angeles a few weeks after his passing.
Music though, was River's greatest love. He was close to sealing a recording contract for his band - Aleka's Attic, at the time of his passing. He wrote most of the band's songs himself, and was once asked to write a song for one of his later movies - 'The Thing Called Love.' He did write a song - 'Lone Star State of Mine,' which he also performed in the movie.
He was a loving, caring and humble human being, who had no care for the Hollywood lifestyle - always preferring to be at home with his family.
River was a bright, shining star who now shines down on his family, friends and fans - from Heaven.

Dear River,
Even though you have only been in my life for a short period of time, you have changed it for the better. You were so incredible, River. I have never EVER come across someone so caring and sensitive. I love you so much and I consider you to be one of my very close friends. You made me laugh, cry, and feel good about myself. I'm starting to shy away from meat everyday, step by step. I do this for you River and for the beautiful animals that you so dearly loved. I think about you every hour of every day and if there is a heaven you deserve to be there. It is so heartbreaking to me to know that you lived such a short life. It isn't fair! But when I'm really sad about you not being here I always cheer myself up and think that of course you can't be really dead. How can someone with such a powerful, beautiful soul be really dead? Your soul is very much alive and you live on through your beautiful family and your fans. River is still on this Earth. He's just not in his body, he's a free spirit. I love you so much River and I will always be a proud fan of yours. I hold you very close to my heart

river phoenix, a outstanding actor, musician, humanitarian, and person. i am so thankful to have discovered river because he has altered my life. through river i have given vegetarianism a try and i'll tell you this i have never felt more better! i really wish river was with us today but everyone dies and its a shame that he had gone too soon :( like anybody river had issues and the only time when he was truly happy was when he played his music, which is better then anything i've been hearing today. it pains me to see river hurt, (photos, film) his smile always seemed so haunting. my favorite actor ever and i am glad that i was alive before he passed (7 months old) i love you river phoenix, thank you for being who you are even till today, you're always missed but never forgotten. you'd be doing wonders if you were alive today but I hope that wherever you are now that you're more happy and relaxed then you were on earth. rest in peace river and i hope we will meet one day :)

a legend in fact who graced us with his soul
beautiful man so fresh, so whole. 17 years and still influential
